Security Camera Equipment

If you've decided to set-up a security system in your house or office building, there are several devices you will need. Some of them are standard and come along with the security camera, while others will have to be purchased separately. The type of devices you will need for your security system may vary upon your specific needs. However, standard security camera equipment should include the following:

l a camera
l a recording/viewing device
l a mounting bracket
l cable
l a camera case

The camera

The camera is, of course, the most important part in any security camera equipment. There are different types of cameras available, each responding to different requirements. If you want high-quality picture you could purchase a color security camera. However, if your budget is low, black and white cameras are cheaper. Black and white cameras are more useful during night time, although many color cameras automatically switch to black and white on low light conditions.

If you plan to use the camera outdoors, a dome camera may be more effective, as it protects the device against bad weather conditions or impact. In addition, most intruders will not be able to notice it and tell where it points at so that they could avoid it. If you plan to use a security camera to spy on someone, you should purchase a small model that can be easily hidden.

A recording/viewing device

Security camera equipment should also include a recording/viewing device. If you'll use the camera in an office building and you have a security guard, you may want to purchase only a monitor. With a monitor you can only view the images, not record them.

A camera can also be connected to a standard computer, which can be used both for viewing or recording. You will also need to install a software package. Some of them are even free. However, if you want minimum involvement from you, a custom embedded device might be a better choice. It comes with everything you need to get your security system running.

Mounting bracket

The mounting bracket is also an important part from your security system equipment. This generally comes along with the camera and it's used to fix it to the wall or ceiling.

Cable

You'll also get a cable along with your security system equipment to help you connect the camera to the recording/viewing devices. It can be either a network cable if you have an IP camera with its own network adapter, or a TV cable, for other types of security cameras.

Camera Case

The camera case is yet another important part of the security camera equipment, especially if you plan to use it outdoors. The case will protect the camera from dirt, bad weather conditions or high impact. They have to be built from a strong material. Another use for the case is to hide the camera and make it difficult to tell where it's pointed at. For mini cameras, the case is usually unnecessary, as they can be hidden basically anywhere (e.g. toys, smoke detectors, clocks, watches).

When calculating the cost for a security system, make sure you take into account not only the price of the camera itself, but also the additional security camera equipment that is not included, such as the recording device and sometimes the case.
